Ches Sweetapple

Ches was born in 1939. He spent considerable time traveling and working in the United States before returning to Newfoundland in 1973, becoming a member of the Longshoreman’s Protective Union (LSPU), as was his father. Starting work as a stevedore with A. Harvey and Co., Sweetapple has firsthand knowledge of the critical shift from manual freight loading to the more mechanized container shipping, as well as the emergence of the oil industry in the Port of St. John’s. Now retired, he lives in the Battery.
